How To ​Add or Remove Joint Account Holders

Use the Add or Remove Joint Account Holders form to change joint account holders.

Joint account holders may be added to or removed from any personal deposit account. A joint account holder can access and manage the accounts. There is no limit to how many joint account holders can be on an account. Refer to the FAQ below for more about how joint account ownership and authority works.

How to Add or Remove Joint Account Holders

Use the Add or Remove Joint Account Holders Form to change the joint account holders on one or more deposit accounts. Complete and submit the form online, or download and complete the PDF, then print the form and bring it to any BECU location.

All accounts listed on the form must have the same primary and joint account holders to add a new joint account holder. Complete and submit a separate request to make changes to accounts with different account holders.

Primary account holders under age 18 require the signature of a parent or guardian who is on the account to make any changes to joint account holders.

What You Need To Complete the Form

If you are adding joint account holders, you will need the following:

  • Valid photo ID, full name, date of birth, Social Security number, address, mother's maiden name and employment information of the primary account holder and each new joint account holder.
  • The email address of each joint on the account if you are completing the form digitally.
  • (Optional) Debit card design preference of each new joint account holder.
  • The signature of the primary and all new and existing joint account holders.

To remove a joint account holder, you need:

  • Valid photo ID, full name, date of birth, Social Security number, address, mother's maiden name and employment information of the primary account holder.
  • Full name, date of birth, and Social Security number of the joint account holder(s) being removed.
  • The signature of the primary account holder, or the signature of the joint account holder(s) being removed.

Electronically sign and submit the form using Docusign®. After the primary account holder completes and signs the form, the joint account holders will receive an email with a link to sign.

Download and complete the Add or Remove Joint Account Holders form. If you have Adobe Acrobat Reader, you can fill in the PDF on your device before you print it. All new and existing joint account holders also need to sign the form if you're adding a new joint account holder.

You can mail it to the address provided on the form, or bring it, along with your photo ID, to any BECU location.

Frequently Asked Questions

A joint account holder shares the responsibility of the account with you. They have equal access to funds and equal responsibility for negative balances on the account(s) and for monitoring account activity. All account holders:

  • Must sign to approve any new joint account holders.
  • May open additional accounts with the same ownership structure. This means each account holder may open a new joint account as long as the same primary account holder, joint account holders and beneficiaries are named on the new account. The type of ownership (joint with right of survivorship or joint without right of survivorship) must also be the same.
  • May move or use money in the jointly owned account(s) and may do so without notice to any other account holders.

No, account holders under age 18 require a parent or guardian remain on the account until the primary account holder reaches the age of 18.

To remove the existing joint account holder and add a different parent or guardian, the parent or guardian being removed and added must both sign the form.
