Frequently Asked Questions

Why won't my iPhone take a picture of my card?

Unfortunately, your BECU Debit Mastercard will likely not “scan” into Apple Pay™ via a picture. This is a known bug with the OCR (Optical Character Recognition) in the Passbook Apple Pay app. Apple is aware of the issue and is planning for a fix, but they have not announced when the fix will be pushed via a software release. In the meantime, you can manually input your card's information.

I get an error when going through the iTunes verification process. Why?

There are a number of verifications that happen in the background. These safeguard your personal information and ensure you are who you say you are, the card is yours, and the device it's being loaded to is also yours. Although this means there might be some hiccups in the verification process, it provides for a much more secure enrollment process. If you do run into issues that require verification, please feel free to call BECU at 800-233-2328.

I get a message to contact BECU after accepting the terms and conditions on my newly issued BECU Debit Mastercard. Why?

We have discovered an issue with Mastercard debit cards that are instantly issued in our branch locations. Although the cards are active on the BECU system, the card must be used in a signature transaction before it can be successfully aligned with Apple Pay. Making and signing for the purchase with the physical card should allow you to successfully add the card to Apple Pay. This is a newly discovered bug, and we apologize for the inconvenience. We are actively working with Mastercard to resolve this issue.

What should I do if I misplace my debit or credit card and/or my iPhone?

If you misplace your debit or credit card, but don't think you've lost it and don't want to cancel your card yet, you can log into the Passbook app on your phone and “suspend” the token. If you also lost your phone, you can log into your “Find My Phone” utility app on another device and suspend or delete the token from there.

What should I do if my card is lost or stolen?

In the instance of a theft or a misplaced card, you should follow the standard security process: immediately Call BECU or visit a BECU Neighborhood Financial Center, then report your lost or stolen card. In addition, you should log into the Passbook app on any and all of your devices and delete the token associated with that card. Once you receive a new card (immediately for Debit Mastercard issued at an NFC), load your new BECU card into Apple Pay using the standard enrollment method – be sure to make it the default card in your Apple Pay wallet. (See Question 3 regarding NFC-issued cards.)

My old card expired and I got a new one: Do I need to do anything?

Yes. If your card expired, or we are replacing your card for security purposes (such as the Target or Home Depot breaches last year), you'll want to ensure you delete any tokens on any of your devices related to the old card. Also ensure you enroll the new card on all of your devices.

What do I need to use Apple Pay on Apple Watch?

To use Apple Pay on your Apple Watch, you need the following:

  • Apple Watch paired with an iPhone 5 (or later) that has iOS 8.2 (or later) installed
  • iCloud account
  • Supported card from a participating card issuer. All BECU Mastercard debit cards and BECU credit cards are eligible.
  • Passcode enabled and Wrist Detection turned on

How do I set up Apple Pay on my Apple Watch?

To add a credit or debit card on Apple Watch, open the Apple Watch app on iPhone and tap Passbook & Apple Pay, then tap Add Credit or Debit Card. If you have a credit or debit card from a participating bank on file with iTunes, you'll be asked to add it. You can also choose to add a different card using the iSight camera, or by entering your card information manually. Then your bank will decide whether to approve adding your card to Apple Pay. They might ask you to provide more information to complete the verification process.
