Where’s My Tax Refund? The IRS Refund Timetable Explained

This information brought to you by TurboTax.

BECU has once again teamed up with TurboTax to save members up to $20. Last year, BECU members saved $242,000 by filing through BECU's Turbo Tax partnership. Through the tax filing period, TurboTax will be providing you with tips and guidance to help you file taxes easily and save money.

Ever wonder what happens between e-filing your tax return and receiving your refund?

  • First, TurboTax "stamps" the return with an electronic postmark, and then they send it to the government.

  • Then you and TurboTax both wait 24 to 48 hours for the IRS to accept your return.

  • What are they doing? They are checking your personal information to make sure it matches their records.

  • If everything looks good, the IRS accepts your return.

Once you are accepted, you are on the IRS payment timetable. In prior years, the IRS issued more than 9 out of 10 refunds to taxpayers in less than 21 days last year. The same results are expected for 2016.

Once you have e-filed your tax return, there are a few ways to check the status of your refund:

Either the mobile apps or the tool will get you personalized refund information based on the processing of your tax return. They will provide an actual refund date as soon as the IRS processes your tax return and approves your refund. Most refunds will be issued in less than 21 days. You can start checking the status of your refund within 24 hours after you have e-filed you return.

Remember, the fastest way to get your refund is to e-file and choose direct deposit.

To direct deposit your tax refund into your BECU account, all you need is:

  • Your checking or savings account number, which you can find in Online Banking

  • BECU's routing number: 325081403

Learn how to e-file

TurboTax makes it easy to get your refund faster by offering e-file. Filing your return electronically is convenient and TurboTax does everything for you.

With e-file, there's no need to print or mail anything. It's as simple as a few clicks in TurboTax. Plus, with direct deposit into your bank account, you could have your refund in as fast as 7 days. The IRS issued more than 9 out of 10 refunds to taxpayers in less than 21 days in 2015. The same results are expected for tax year 2016.

Don't have a bank account? No problem. TurboTax will put your refund on a pre-loaded Visa® debit card that you can use anywhere Visa debit cards are accepted.

E-filing is safe and secure. TurboTax uses the same encryption technology used by banks to e-file your return. That means your information is protected from any unauthorized access while it's electronically sent to the IRS and state agencies.

Need some proof to sleep easier? TurboTax provides an email acknowledgement within 48 hours that the IRS received your return. You can also log on to your TurboTax account and see your current e-file status.

So why wait weeks for your refund check to arrive in the mail? Get your refund fast with e-file. It's easy.
