investing in 10 minutes a day

You might think that keeping up-to-date on your investments takes too much time and effort, but the truth of the matter is you can stay on top of your investment strategy by devoting just ten minutes a day.

Ric Sarro, CFP® and Senior Program Manager of BECU Investment Services*, suggests that you spend your ten minutes a day to educate yourself about investing, rather than focusing on following or worrying about daily swings in the market. Our goal is to make investing as simple and transparent for you as possible. By using our free educational webinars and seminars, members can easily add to their knowledge of the market before they invest a dime.

When you're first starting out, we recommend the following step-by-step strategy.

Do Your Own Research

There's no shortage of investment information available online, but be careful what you read: quality always tops quantity. Rather than overwhelm yourself with a vast array of material, peruse the information available and choose two or three trusted sources you like. A good place to start is “The Essays of Warren Buffett: Lessons for Investors and Managers.” It's widely considered to be some of the best investment advice available anywhere, and provides many pearls of wisdom throughout its pages. You can even get a free PDF of the book here.

After you've read up on investing to help get a solid understanding of what you'd like to do, use our investment resources. Continue to read up on a topic you're curious about, attend a free webinar or seminar, and when you're ready, we'll be happy to help you create an investment plan that works for you.

Plan  Ahead

Did you know that households that plan ahead to make sure they have the money to pay for large irregular expenses are ten times more likely to be financially healthy than those that don'ti?

Planning is critical to any investment strategy; however, a plan is only useful if it's executed appropriately. For help on that, read our article on better budgeting.

Execute Your Plan

A plan is great to have, but what's the point if you don't follow it? Spend a few of your ten-minute investment sessions ensuring that you've got automatic withdrawals set up to feed your investments, and ensure that any interest earned is being reinvested properly.

Don't Get Emotional

When it comes to investing, there are do-it-yourselfers out there who do very well on their own, but a DIY investment strategy takes a lot more time than 10 minutes a day. What's more, to be disciplined at managing your own investments, Sarro advises you need to remove emotion from your decision making. He says even with his expertise, he uses a financial advisor for his personal investments because he knows that emotions can keep people from making objective investment decisions.

Talk to Your Advisor

You don't need to talk to your advisor every day, but it's a good idea to meet with him or her at least once a year to ensure you're still on track to work towards your financial goals – especially when life's events pop up: marriage, divorce, births, deaths, changes of job, inheritance That's one of the advantages of working with a financial advisor at BECU Investment Services. They're there to support you when you have questions or need advice.

Staying on top of your investment strategy is critical to strong financial health, and the good news is you can do it in just 10 minutes a day! Sign up for a BECU Investment Services seminar or webinar or get in touch with a financial advisor at BECU Investment Services. All it takes is ten minutes a day to invest in your financial health.
